Originally founded as San Juan of Chachapoyas Border, it is the capital of Amazonas. This region is famous for its foggy forests, its moorland and privileged microclimates. It is the habitat for orchids, Andean bears and Andean cocks-of-the-rock. Here you will find the enigmatic Kuelap remains, a citadel built in the middle of the Andes and the Peruvian rain forest. Mysterious tombs and sarcophagi await. This site was built by the kingdom of Chachapoyas culture.
