Tumbes is the capital of the northern department of Peru, 30% of its territory has been declared Protected Natural Area. The National Sanctuary of Tumbes Mangroves has large aquatic forests and it is the habitat of frigatebirds, herons, and different birds. The weather is warm and semi humid all year round. Its geography shows small hills and beautiful beaches. Due to its proximity to the Equator, its beaches are ideal for surfing, diving, and fishing and for vacationers looking for sunshine and warm weather. The most popular are Punta Sal, one of the best beaches due to its white sand and rich sea life, and Zorritos, famous for its calm sea and its wide variety of fish.
